The spleen detects and responds to foreign substances in the blood, destroys worn-out erythrocytes, and acts as a blood reservoir. Foreign substances in the blood passing through the white pulp can stimulate lymphocytes in the periarterial sheath or the lymph nodules in the same manner as in lymph nodes.
